Domestic series of electric pallet trucks, electric stackers, electric tow tractors, and freight elevators are gradually becoming market-oriented. Semi-electric stackers and pallet trucks, in particular, have captured a significant share of the electric forklift market due to their price advantages, while manual forklifts are slowly fading from use. In other words, for electric forklifts to secure a foothold in the market, they must embody specific key characteristics and undergo targeted transformations-specifically, the "Five Attributes and Twelve Transformations":
Core Technology, Energy Efficiency, and Environmental Friendliness: Generally, electric forklifts are categorized into fully electric and semi-electric models. While semi-electric models dominate due to lower costs, fully electric models offer superior power, albeit at a higher price point. To enhance energy efficiency and meet increasingly stringent environmental regulations, manufacturers should focus on reducing emissions, improving hydraulic system efficiency, and minimizing vibration and noise. It is certain that forklifts characterized by low emissions and quiet operation will be welcomed by enterprises. Battery-powered forklifts and those running on fuels like natural gas or LPG are poised for further development. Currently, battery-powered tow tractors and stackers account for 40% of total global forklift production (compared to 15%–20% domestically). In Western European nations such as Germany and Italy, this figure reaches as high as 65% and continues to rise. The adoption of AC motors and variable-frequency drive technology has revolutionized battery-powered forklifts. The trend toward higher AC motor voltages results in reduced heat generation and increased operational efficiency, effectively overcoming the drawbacks associated with DC motors-namely excessive heat, low efficiency, and frequent maintenance requirements. Furthermore, rapid charging technology has matured; charging currents can now exceed four times those of traditional methods, resulting in shorter charging times and higher efficiency.
Electronic Integration, Intelligence, and Informatization: There is a promising market outlook for highly reliable, high-performance products and mechatronic forklifts equipped with advanced electronic technology. Leveraging the growth of the warehousing sector, manufacturers should develop new product varieties, particularly reach trucks and electric counterbalance stackers. Computer technology is being progressively adopted in electric forklifts, enabling computerized control systems. Ride-on, fully electric forklifts are well-suited for toxic or specialized environments and offer significant growth potential.
Specialization, High Performance, and Diversification
The proliferation of automated warehousing systems and large-scale supermarkets has stimulated demand for indoor material handling machinery. Various types of warehouse forklifts-such as high-performance electric forklifts, reach trucks, ride-on electric stackers, and narrow-aisle forklifts-are developing rapidly. To replace manual labor with mechanization, boost productivity, and meet operational requirements in confined urban construction sites, warehouses, docks, cargo holds, farm buildings, multi-story structures, and underground projects, small and micro-forklifts have found their niche and are seeing fast growth. Currently, articulated forklifts have also appeared on the market, primarily designed for material handling in narrow aisles.
Meanwhile, the versatility of forklifts is increasing; this allows users to maximize equipment efficiency and accomplish more tasks without additional investment.
Safety, Comfort, Stability, Reliability, and After-sales Support
As globalization accelerates, product safety has become a critical threshold for Chinese enterprises entering international markets. Forklift designs are shifting toward streamlined, rounded profiles, which improve operator visibility and enhance operational safety. New forklift models place greater emphasis on ergonomics to ensure smoother, more stable operation. Research indicates that a well-designed cabin interior boosts productivity; when controls are ergonomically arranged, operators enjoy greater comfort and can better focus on their work.
Standardization into Series, Scaling Up, and Technological Advancement
Developing product series is a key trend in forklift evolution. Major international companies are progressively standardizing their product lines, creating a comprehensive range of specifications spanning from micro to ultra-large models. Concurrently, product lifecycles-the time between model updates-are shortening significantly. Large-scale forklift products are characterized by high technological content, long development and production cycles, substantial investment requirements, and limited market capacity; furthermore, market competition is concentrated among a small number of companies. Consequently, my country must intensify its research and development efforts, continuously update product lines with successive generations of new models, and develop high-tech equipment such as electric pallet trucks, electric stackers, and hydraulic lifts.
